Common Cat Care Mistakes

November 1, 2019

There are many things to love about cats. Fluffy is cute, cuddly, hilarious, and clean. She’s also easy to care for. However, our feline friends aren’t quite as independent as they want us to think. Kitties need TLC to stay healthy, happy, and purring! In this article, a Mattoon, IL vet lists some common cat care mistakes.

Letting Fluffy Roam

We know, cats like fun outdoor activities, like making paw art on windshields, refusing to come when called, and bringing their humans ‘presents.’ However, as soon as Fluffy sets those cute little paws outdoors, she is exposed to hazards from traffic, weather, parasites, wild animals, and other dangers. Your furry friend will be both safer and healthier indoors!

Punishment

Cats are wonderful pets, but they aren’t purrfect. Fluffy may knock something over, or use your favorite chair as a manicure station. Never punish your furry buddy for these mishaps. This may just make her anxious and afraid! Instead, use positive reinforcement to improve your kitty’s petiquette, and focus on rewarding good behavior.

Lack of Entertainment

As you’ve probably noticed, napping is Fluffy’s favorite pastime. Cats can’t sleep all the time, though. Your pet needs ways to amuse herself when she’s actually awake. Give your kitty plenty of toys to push under the sofa, and offer her a comfy window seat with a good view.

Dirty Litterboxes

Cats are very clean, and they prefer their powder rooms kept the same way. We recommend scooping daily, and changing the litter every week.

Lapsing on Veterinary Care

Many of our feline patients don’t see us as often as they should. Fluffy should be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and kept current on her exams, vaccinations, and parasite control. Aside from your pet’s regular wellness care appointments, it’s also important to watch for signs of illness or injury. Some common ones are hiding, poor grooming, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory issues, crankiness, reduced appetite, and uncharacteristic behavior or vocalizations. Since cats often try to mask signs of illness, you may not notice anything until your kitty is quite sick.

Not Enough Quality Time

Kitties are very emotional, and are happiest when they feel loved and safe. Spend lots of time with Fluffy, and keep that little motor going!
