Meet the Persian

History

The Persian is one of the oldest known breeds of cats. Fluffy has been depicted in hieroglyphics that have been dated as far back as 1684 BC. As one might suspect, these cute kitties likely originated in Persia, specifically in the area now known as Iran. An Italian traveler named Pietro Della Valle brought them over to Europe in the 1500’s. We suspect it didn’t take Fluffy long to claw her way into her spot as an adorable, beloved lapcat.

Temperament

Persians tend to be pretty relaxed and laid back. They’re also very affectionate, and love to snuggle. However, they can be choosy about whose laps they grace. Fluffy may bond closely with you, but ignore everyone else.

Grooming

One of the Persians’ most distinct features is their long, pretty fur. Fluffy will need some help with her beauty routine. We recommend brushing your feline pal daily, or at least every other day. Your kitty will also need the occasional bath. If you adopt a kitten, it’s best to get your little ball of cute used to being bathed while she’s young. You’ll thank yourself later.

Coloring

Persians, as you probably have noticed, are typically quite fluffy. These pretty cats sport a variety of pretty colors and patterns, including solid, silver and gold, shaded, smoke, tabby, particolor, bicolor, and Himalayan. We think they’re all purrfect!

Chatter

Persians are talkative, but they tend to be more interactive than loud. Their voices are usually quite cute and charismatic, and perhaps a bit squeaky.

Activity

Persians are about average on the kitty activity scale. They’re playful as kittens, but once past the ‘terrible twos’, they aren’t usually the frisky furballs that you’ll be plucking from your drapes or disengaging from your ankle. These cats really do best as pampered indoor ‘princess’ pets. We don’t recommend letting them go outdoors.

Health Issues

Persians are often quite flat-faced. Many breeders deliberately seek out that squished-face appearance. This look may be cute, but unfortunately it leaves Persians vulnerable to some very serious health issues, including shortness of breath, tearing, and eye problems. In fact, activists are now pushing for changes in the breed standard. Ask your vet for care tips.
