Flying With Fido

December 1, 2021

Season’s Greetings …it’s that time of year! This year’s holiday season may well be much busier than last year’s. Many people bring their dogs along when traveling …. even on planes. But is that a good idea? A vet talks about flying with Fido below.

Think It Over

Flying can be very stressful for dogs. Fido doesn’t understand how flying works and can get very scared by the vibration and noise. Your pup may be happier and more comfortable being boarded. Something else to consider here is size. A small dog sitting in your lap will have a much smoother flight than a big pooch flying in cargo. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Have Paperwork

Make sure to bring copies of Fido’s vaccination and registration records with you. Your flight bag will easily hold paper copies, but still be sure to take pictures of them and email them to yourself. That way you’ll have them in both your phone gallery and inbox, and can access them anywhere from online.

Go Direct

Direct flights may be a little pricier, but they’re much easier on your furry pal. Try to avoid layovers. If that’s not possible, book the flight with the shortest stops.

Do Some Research

Airlines tend to vary widely on their pet travel policies. You definitely want to read the fine print in this area! And take note that some airlines simply have better safety records for pet travel than others. So read up before you book your flight. Also, remember to ask your vet about options for calming medications to make the trip easier on your furry pal.

Food

Fido’s usual food and treats may not be accessible at your destination. You may want to ship some to your destination. And too, if you’re staying at an AirBnB or hotel, you’ll need to coordinate with them or use a mail store.

ID

Make sure your canine pal is microchipped before your trip, and that the registry information is up to date. Fido should also be sporting ID tags. If he’ll be traveling in a crate, be sure to put an ID on that too. Luggage tags work well for this. You can also try using a mailing label. Make it waterproof by putting some clear tape over it.
