Snow Dog Care Tips

January 15, 2022

Anyone have a snow dog? Interestingly, snow dogs aren’t an official AKC group: most dogs that fall into this category are actually part of the working group. However, doggies with thick fur, such as Samoyeds, huskies, Akitas, and Malamutes are typically referred to as snow dogs. These furry pups are often absolutely gorgeous, and they can make for very lovable, fun pets. They do have some specific needs, though. In this post, a vet talks about snow dog care.

Good Grooming Is A Must

So what’s the downside of having a very pretty, fluffy dog? That pretty fur has a tendency to show up everywhere. So regular brushing is a must. You’ll want to use a brush that’s made specifically for undercoats. Vacuums or vacuum attachments can also get the job done. Never shave or clip Fido, though, since this can damage his undercoat.

Don’t Clothe Fido

Fido’s fur makes him much more equipped to deal with the cold than a Boxer or Chihuahua would be. So you’ll never need to put clothing on your canine pal; he could overheat! Though in summertime, he may need a cooling vest, or even a kiddie pool full of cool water.

Offer Plenty Of Exercise

Many snow dogs like to be very, very active. For example, Huskies work well as sled dogs, since they’re pretty much hardwired to want to run. Offer your furry buddy lots of toys and playtime. Otherwise, all that energy may be channeled into making mischief. With these guys, a strong, sturdy fence is a must.

Training Is A Must

Fido should know basic commands, like Sit, Stay, Heel, and Come by heart. Since pulling is quite natural for many of these pups, you may need to do some extra work with Heel.

Have A Singalong

Snow dogs tend to be quite vocal. Your pooch probably won’t bark all that much, though: he’s more likely to sing or howl. This is natural behavior, which means it’s not something you should ever punish your canine pal for. Try singing along with him and just go with it!

Do Breed Research

Most dogs tend to develop breed-specific health conditions. So make it a point to read about your furry bff, and find out what he may be susceptible to. This is important to your ability to take preventative measures and spot problems early on. Ask your vet for care tips.
